This blog is mainly to help me and Ron (my fabulous coach) keep track of what is going on in my training. Good days. Bad days. Successes and failures. Aches and pains. That sort of thing. But please come visit once in a while to see how we're getting on!

Two easy runs

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run with buggy
7M pm recovery run with buggy

Two easy runs today. To and from Pimlico to visit Hugh via some belated Christmas shopping.

Monday, 30 December 2013

Just one easy six

7M am easy run with the buggy

Just one easy one today.

Sunday, 29 December 2013

A good long tempo run on the Heath

17M am incl 14M medium-long tempo

I was feeling full of running beans again today, so I headed to the Heath for three laps of the National cross-country course. It was muddy. And fun.

Saturday, 28 December 2013

Some solid K reps while Yasmin took Hana for a run

14M double; K rep session & recovery run
7M am incl 8x1K off 90s
7M pm recovery run

I ran a good K rep session around the track this morning while Yasmin took Hana for a run with the buggy. I squeezed in eight reps before she came back!

Friday, 27 December 2013

Six easy

6M am recovery run

Just six easy miles today.

Thursday, 26 December 2013

Rest

No run today. Too much food to prepare and eat.

Wednesday, 25 December 2013

A gentle Christmas 14 mile site-seeing run

14M am easy run

I woke up early for no good reason and treated myself to a gentle 14 miler around some central London sights (the usual parks, then Buckingham Palace, Whitehall, Traf Square, a bit of the river and then home via Kings Cross). Not many other people were up, though I did see 4 other runners.

Tuesday, 24 December 2013

Sluggish mile reps

9M am incl 5x1M off 90s jog

I got up earlyish and ran five sluggish mile reps this morning. I felt really slow but saved myself the indignity of actually timing them. At least it was a session.

Monday, 23 December 2013

A bit windy for running with a buggy

11M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run with buggy
4M pm recovery run with buggy

It was blustery today. My first run on the Heath was ok, even if Kenwood had been closed for safety reasons. My second was a misjudgement. It didn't seem too bad from inside. Lesson learnt.

Sunday, 22 December 2013

A long run!

20M am easy long run

I miscalculated and ran a bit further than I had planned this morning. Down through Regent's and Hyde Parks to the river, across to Limehouse and back along the canal. It came out at just over 20 miles. I took it pretty easy. And enjoyed it.

Saturday, 21 December 2013

A race!

9M pm incl 5M Met league cross-country race (29m28s; 45th; 10th Highgate)

I really enjoyed getting back to racing, even if I'm a bit sluggish right now. The thrill of the start line is just one of my favourite things. And I do love flinging myself down the muddy hill at Ally Pally!

I didn't have a clue where I was going to be fitness-wise, so settled into a cautious rhythm from the gun. I probably got it about right and slowly picked my way through the field.

The fields in Met league races are getting stronger and stronger, so it's hard too judge how far down I am on my pre-paternity leave form. Looking at the other people who are usually around me, I think I'm probably 30-60s down.

Friday, 20 December 2013

Two recovery runs

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run with buggy
7M pm recovery run with buggy

I managed two runs today. The first into town for brunch at Honey & Co (and shopping). The second around the Heath.

Thursday, 19 December 2013

Buggy fartlek on the Heath!

16M double; recovery run & fartlek with buggy
7M am recovery run with buggy
9M pm incl 30min hard running as part of fartlek with buggy

I ran a pretty good fartlek session with the buggy in the Heath today. I ran hard on the flat and ups and gently downhill. It included four ascents of Parliament Hill. The best loop for reps with the buggy is a 4min30s loop along the flat path past the track, then up the path to the top of the hill from the cafe. I could jog slowly down to the start of the loop again in 2min30s, which isn't disasterously long. The hill is a killer behind a buggy!

Wednesday, 18 December 2013

Rest

Another busy, runless day.

Tuesday, 17 December 2013

3 miles tempo

I had a busy day but had enough time to run flat out home Queens Square. A nice little sharpener.

Monday, 16 December 2013

Rest

No running. Busy.

Sunday, 15 December 2013

Cross-country tempo on the Heath

9M incl 7M cross-country tempo

I headed to the Heath and ran two big loops of the National cross-country course in my trail shoes. It was a goody. Firm enough to really go for it. Soggy enough to make it good fun!

Saturday, 14 December 2013

Six around the Heath

6M steady with buggy

Yasmin and I ran a bit faster around the same route on the Heath today. I'll call it a steady run.

Friday, 13 December 2013

Mile reps with the buggy!

16M double; two runs including a total of 6x1M with buggy
7M am recovery and 2x1M hard with buggy
9M pm incl 4x1M hard with buggy

I ran six mile reps with the buggy up and down my favourite section of the Embankment (Blackfriars to Westminster). I only got a few odd looks. I don't know how fast I was going, but something around 6min/M I think.

Thursday, 12 December 2013

Recovery

8M recovery run with buggy

Just eight gentle buggy miles today. I'm feeling in need of a session.

More rest

I could have run today, but didn't manage to fit it in with our staycation plans.

Wednesday, 11 December 2013

Recovery

6M am recovery run with buggy

Just a short one around the Heath before heading to 'Rhyme Time'. I got a puncture(!) and got turned away from the rhymes for being late.

Tuesday, 10 December 2013

Recovery

8M pm recovery run with buggy

I'm back in London and reunited with my buggy! Hana and I had an appointment with 'mini-Mozart' this morning, so I only ran once. Around the Heath.

Monday, 9 December 2013

Several days of rest

Yasmin has been away at a conference and I've been away without the running buggy, so I've not run since Friday. I really need to get back to it...

Friday, 6 December 2013

Tempo!

9M incl 7M tempo

I finally managed a session. Seven miles hard up Swains Lain and up and down the road across top of the Heath. It's one of my current favourite routes.

I managed to find and maintain a good level of discomfort today. I think it was a good one.

Wednesday, 4 December 2013

More rest

Another day off - I'm still ill.

Tuesday, 3 December 2013

Rest

I'm brewing my cold again, so didn't run.

Monday, 2 December 2013

Recovery

8M am recovery run

I'm a bit ill, so I kept it easy today. Eight gentle miles around the Heath while Y looked after Hana and waited for some deliveries at home.

Sunday, 1 December 2013

Rest

We're having a staycation this week. I'll do some running, but not as much as usual.

Saturday, 30 November 2013

A run with Yasmin!

6M am recovery run with buggy

Yasmin and I went on our first run together in a year today. I took the buggy. It worked pretty well and we found a nice buggy-friendly six mile route on the Heath.

Friday, 29 November 2013

Rest

Another day of lots of driving and no running.

Thursday, 28 November 2013

Rest

A busy day. No running. Lots of driving.

Wednesday, 27 November 2013

Recovery

15M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run with buggy
8M pm recovery run with buggy

I ran to and from the Science Museum with Hana in the buggy to see the Collider exhibition with some friends. It's a hard life this paternity leave.

Tuesday, 26 November 2013

A fragmented session

12M double; 3M hard and 9M 'buggy fartlek'
3M am tempo
9M pm buggy run on the Heath with smooth uphills run hard

I had a work meeting this morning so my parents looked after Hana. I then ran back full pelt to take over parenting duties. My second run was with Hana (asleep) in the buggy. I ran the uphills hard where the path was smooth and the rest easy. It was easier than a proper fartlek, but the buggy makes uphills a nightmare at the best of times, so my legs were really tired by the time I got home. I think I might work on this session. If I could find a good route, it would work really well. Today, I spent too much time on dodgy paths where I didn't feel comfortable going fast.

Monday, 25 November 2013

Rest

Planned rest

Sunday, 24 November 2013

Two hours with friends

17M am gentle long run

I ran for a couple of hours around the Heath and Highgate with Mike and Henry among others. A nice chatty gentle long run. Just what my legs need right now.

Saturday, 23 November 2013

Six recovery miles

6M am recovery run with buggy

Yasmin and I went for our first run together in a year today. Thanks to the buggy.

Friday, 22 November 2013

Recovery

15M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run with buggy
8M pm recovery run with buggy

I ran to Borough Market and back via Westminster with the buggy today. Nice and gently. My legs could still feel yesterday's session.

Thursday, 21 November 2013

Tempo

9M pm incl 7M tempo

This was a really good one. I found myself in a good, focused rhythm from within the first mile or so of the tempo part of my run. My legs felt great / awful afterwards.

Wednesday, 20 November 2013

Ten more buggy recovery miles

10M double; recovery runs x2
3M am recovery run with buggy
7M pm recovery run with buggy

I ran another two buggy-assisted recovery runs today. The first was around a small loop in the Heath on my way to the library for Hana. The second was along the canal from Camden to London Fields and a visit to the E5 Bakehouse where my sourdough sandwich was to die for. And I brought a loaf home.

Tuesday, 19 November 2013

Moonlit mile reps...

9M am incl 5x1M off 90s jog

I got up unpalatably early again today to get a buggy-free session in. I'm not sure I've run by moonlight before. I felt pretty sluggish and wasn't helped by little areas of ice on the home straight, but my legs felt exercised for the rest of the day, so I think it must have been worth the effort.

Monday, 18 November 2013

Ten buggy recovery miles

10M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run with buggy
3M pm recovery run with buggy

I ran two easy ones today into town and back home on an errand with Hana in her buggy. It's harder work with the buggy, more like a steady run if there are hills involved (as there were on my way in).

Sunday, 17 November 2013

Fifteen with the buggy

15M pm longish run

The mileage doesn't sound long, but this took two hours and a little bit. It's different running with a buggy. I think my posture isn't bad. If anything, it probably pushes me further forward onto my toes. But you can't move your arms and hills are obviously an issue.

Hana seemed to enjoy the ride - she slept for most of it and babbled away to herself for the 40 or so minutes she was awake.

53 miles for the week.

Saturday, 16 November 2013

Seven slow miles with my buggy and then a tempo run

Looks comfy n'est ce pas? It's a Bobgear Ironman. I bought it in a sober navy.

14M double; recovery run with buggy & tempo run
7M am slow run with buggy
7M pm incl 5M tempo

I gave the buggy a spin around the Heath today. It's great, though there's no amount of technical brilliance that can make it a breeze to push a chubby baby in a buggy up Parliament Hill.

Nevertheless, I feel liberated and will be able to run my easy runs during the (normal) waking hours)... And to prove, it I fitted in another run in the evening. It was a good little tempo run on the roads around the Heath.

Friday, 15 November 2013

Rest / buggy maintenance

I sacrificed running for sleep and buggy maintenance today. The brakes needed a bit of a tweak (at the bike shop). I should be good to trial it tomorrow.

Thursday, 14 November 2013

K reps

7M am incl 8x1K off 90s jog

ANOTHER early morning run today. Again, it felt pretty sluggish.

But thank goodness, the buggy has arrived. I just need to get it roadworthy and I will be able to run and sleep.

Wednesday, 13 November 2013

Eight miles - I am SLEEPY!

8M am recovery run

An easy early morning run again. I am SLEEPY!

Tuesday, 12 November 2013

Early morning mile reps again

9M am incl 8x1K off 200m (~90s) jog

I made another early morning visit to the track to run K reps. They felt pretty sluggish.

Monday, 11 November 2013

Rest

This was a semi-planned rest day. Basically, I couldn't face getting up early again just for a recovery run. I hope the buggy arrives soon...

Sunday, 10 November 2013

15 gently

15M pm slow medium-long run

I ran a really gentle pre-dinner 15 miler today. I had had a really heavy lunch, which detracted from the enjoyableness of it but it did at least mean I ended the week with a decent number of miles under the belt (and two solid sessions).

51 miles for the week.

Saturday, 9 November 2013

Tempo!

8M incl 6M tempo **

I ran a hard evening run today, with six miles hard. I felt really good for the first time since the marathon. I had a real spring in my stride from the moment I left the door.

Friday, 8 November 2013

Rest

No time for running again. Too tired to get up early.

Thursday, 7 November 2013

Mile reps (around the dark track)

9M am incl 5x1M off 90s jog

I don't know how long I can sustain 5 am starts to squeeze runs in, but it turns out not to be a bad time to run reps on the track! The gentle glow of light from the city means that I could see where I was going and it seemed a safer surface to choose than leaf-strewn pavements. It was hard to see my watch until closer to six-thirty.

Wednesday, 6 November 2013

Nine

9M am recovery run

Another 5am start. Another recovery run. I will be ready to run hard tomorrow I think.

Tuesday, 5 November 2013

Ten...

10M am recovery run

I got up at 5, yes 5am, to fit in a recovery run around the roads skirting the Heath. It was nice out, but it would have been nicer to stay in bed longer and run later.

Monday, 4 November 2013

Paternity leave

I started two months of paternity leave on Friday to look after Hana who is now 8 months old. She will start at nursery in January. Until then, I am home full time with her.

What that means for my running, who knows. My first step has been to order a running buggy. It will arrive in one to two weeks. Today, I didn't manage to work out a time to run. I think it may require early mornings or running just before dinner once Yasmin is home.

Sunday, 3 November 2013

Eight

8M pm recovery run

Hardly a long, run but this feels like good progress.

Saturday, 2 November 2013

Six, very gently

6M am recovery slow

This was definitely a run, even if it was very slow. My calves got tight about half a mile in, but didn't stop my making my slow way around the Heath.

Thursday, 31 October 2013

Three miles!

3M am slow jog to walk

Better than yesterday, but still very tight

Wednesday, 30 October 2013

A mile!

One very slow mile... but encouraging signs in terms of my legs' general well being: though I can only jog, I don't think I have any sign of injury.

Sunday, 27 October 2013

A disappointing run in Frankfurt

27M incl Frankfurt Marathon in 2h25m15s

It wasn't a good running day for me today. I can't be sure why yet. But it just felt harder work than it should have from fairly early on. It's hard to gauge, but the winds were strong (up to 59kph ) and I probably should have backed off any planned schedule and run more by feel. Though the wind was ba , I don't think I was on the same plain as I was at the Great North, where everything came easily. I can tell I wouldn't have run well even in good conditions. Just as the weather didn't stop me having a stormer at the Great North.

I had hoped to go through half way in 69.00-69.30 but figured that with a fairly stiff breeze, I would just have to see what groups formed on roughly the right sort of schedule and play it by ear. Through 10K I was in a group of five bang on what I had hoped and feeling ok, though not super-easy as I did in my really good run in 2011.

Between 10K and half way the group sped up and split up and I was left in no-mans land heading into the wind. I didn't respond too badly psychologically until I was dropped by the women's lead group at about 24K, having gone through half way with them in 71 minutes, which tells you how much I had slowed in the second 10K.

From 24ishK to the end was a real mental battle. For a good stretch of it I was considering bailing, but couldn't let myself. I kept the pressure on, but it's hard when your heart isn't there and I lost more and more time. The nail in the day's coffin was the killer turn back into the wind for the final couple of K. I felt like I was almost at a stand-still, despite moving not too badly.

It's days like today that remind me how much I should value the great days I've had. And hope that more come.

I'm going to take a semi-enforced breather now. I'm taking over full-time childcare duties for two months from this coming Friday, something I'm really looking forward to and which will provide excellent distraction from sore hamstrings and a sore running pride. I will have to work out how training will fit into this new reality and what follows, which will involve plenty of nursery pick-ups and drop-offs.

Saturday, 26 October 2013

Nearly at the start line... feeling lucky!

Rest

I'm feeling lucky! Lucky to be here as fit and as fast as I've ever been.. Fresh at the end of a fantastic block of training. Without a hint of injury or the colds that I've had hanging around since the Great North. And lucky in the sense of the over-zealous, 'this is what I've killed myself for all those months for and I'd die if I were anywhere but here' mind-set that I run best with: cheesy, brings a tear to the eye lucky....

Just the sort of lucky feeling you can to turn into a passionate attack on each passing second when the race really starts at the 20 mile marker.

My plan? A PB for sure. Anything over 2.20 would be disappointing. Depending on conditions and the groups that form, I will head out to go through half in 69.00-69.30.

It says it will be windy. But they predicted a storm for the Great North and that was just a recipe for me to collapse over the finishing line sobbing with satisfaction at how much I had taken of my PB.

69 something should be an ok split. In London in 2011 I ran the first half in 70.30 and my half marathon PB was two and a half minutes slower. Admittedly, that was a day where normal rules didn't seem to apply. But like at the Great North Six weeks ago, I've got that feeling again.

I'll see you on the other side....

Friday, 25 October 2013

Four or five

4-5M am recovery run

I felt great on my little jog this morning. It was pretty early, so I kept to the lighter parts of the Heath and the surrounding roads. My legs are full of (nervous) energy. And I've slept well all week, so I'm feeling fresh in the head too.

Thursday, 24 October 2013

Just five

5M am recovery run

My legs are starting to feel really up for Sunday now. And it's time to start the carbo loading...

Wednesday, 23 October 2013

Six

6M am recovery run

The taper continues... six easy miles around the Heath and in the way to work this morning.

Tuesday, 22 October 2013

A touch of race pace

8M am incl 2M at 5.12min/M

As usual on pre-race Tuesday, I wanted to run a bit of a dress rehearsal. So I pulled on my racers and headed to the track to run two miles at race pace. They came out at 78 second laps, i.e. ~5.12min/M, without too much concentration which is encouraging. Race pace will be a bit slower than that (5.12 is 2.16 pace.

Monday, 21 October 2013

Ten. And some visualisation

10M am steady run

I am out in Chelmsford for clinic today. My usual run on Monday in marathon week might be 10 miles on the course itself. So instead I settled for some visualisation.

My pre-race soundtrack has been in my head since I played it on Saturday and I can feel my emotions building, ready for battle. I run well in a high of feeling lucky to be racing and (over?-)confidence in my ability to outperform expectations. The field looks great for Sunday, including a good number of friendly faces from the British scene. I feel that will provide good company and just the environment to produce another 'how did you do that with your shit 10K PB?' performance.... I can't wait!

Sunday, 20 October 2013

Eight (on a Sunday)

8M am recovery run

The taper must be here... only eight miles today. I had thought of running again in the evening, but we had too much fun in Cambridge, and I suspect a short recovery run will not be the making of next Sunday's race.

Saturday, 19 October 2013

An acceptable cross-country performance

10M pm incl 8K Met League cross-country race (24th)

I didn't run the best today. Part of that was down to a supremely rubbish start... which was all my fault and down to me being chicken and trying to avoid breaking something on the bottlenecky downhill rutted slippy first 400m. Despite being well positioned before the gun, I was about 70th after 400m and spent the first lap going slow in file trying to get around people. At least that meant that I spent the whole race gaining places, but it must have lost me about 20-30 seconds. And to be honest, I didn't really feel I had that much in me late in the race either. Lack of hill training? Hard session on Thursday? Hopefully one or other of those is the explanation rather than anything relevant to next week's marathon.

Friday, 18 October 2013

Rest

A planned day of rest... Though it'll still be less than 48 hours between my pyramid session and the Met League race on Saturday. My legs are feeling it...

Thursday, 17 October 2013

A pyramid session

16M double; recovery run & pyramid session
7M am recovery run
9M incl 400-600-800-1K-1.2K-1.2K-1K-800-600-400 off 45-90s jog

I squeezed in a pyramid session (my first for a while) down on the Embankment after work today. My latest cold is on its way out andhas left me croaky after talking all day in clinic, but didn't seem to slow me down. I felt pretty good. Hopefully my legs will be in the mood for some cross-country come 14.35 on Saturday. It's Met league season and I'm using the first round as my final little sharpener pre-Frankfurt.

Wednesday, 16 October 2013

Recovery

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

Two easies, either side of a busy day.

Now that I have dropped my mileage, I'm really looking forward to my next session. A bit more speed tomorrow.

Tuesday, 15 October 2013

K reps

16M double; recovery run & K rep session
6M am recovery run
10M pm incl 8x1K off 90s jog

I ran a kilometre rep session in Regent's Park again this evening on my way home. I've run this session quite a few times, though often with ten rather than eight reps, and I think I can definitely feel improvement... my legs were moving well tonight.

Monday, 14 October 2013

Recovery

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

My legs aren't suffering too much after yesterday. Only a mild tightness to my calves. I bumped into Ryan and ran home with him - a nice change from the usual.

Sunday, 13 October 2013

Shorter reps!

16M double; 400m rep session & recovery run
10M am incl 16x400m in 72-77s off 45s jog
6M pm recovery run

I ran a shorter rep session this morning in the wind and pouring rain. Not my fastest, bit it did feel like it got my legs turning over nicely. Increased cadence is not something that comes naturally to me.

I felt great on my evening run. Unlike the morning, the skies were clear and I was cozily wrapped up in leggings and long sleeves.

92 miles for the week. My sharpening and tapering continues next week...

14 days to go. Today's excitement came from watching Dennis Kimetto and Emmanuel Mutai pulverise themselves/each other in Chicago.

Saturday, 12 October 2013

Rest

A planned day off!

The most active I got today was to press the refresh button on Twitter to keep updated on Highgate's storming run for 6th in the National 6 Stage road relay.

Friday, 11 October 2013

A really good 18 mile crescendo run

19M am incl 18M crescendo at 6.45min/M (0-6M); 5.40 (6-12M); 5.30-5.15 (12-18M)

This felt really good. My legs were fresh after two recovery days and I had time before setting out to drink coffee and some Lucozade, so I felt in good shape to hit it hard.

My first segment was nice and slow, though speeding up towards the end.

My second segment, from 6 to 12 miles, was a mild battle as usual to up the pace at the beginning. But by a mile into it, once I reached the open stretches of path in Hyde Park, I hit a really good section of relaxed, almost easy, running at 5.40 pace. Like last Sunday, I felt easy all the way to the final step up in pace.

The third segment, from 12 to 18 miles was from Hyde Park Corner, down Birdcage Walk, up the river to Vauxhall and then along the river to Bankside, across the Millennium Bridge and up to Waterloo Bridge. It's all pretty good and clear running and I found I was really able to speed along. 5.30 pace felt pretty good - I was pushing but not panting - so for the last 3 miles I pushed the pace up a bit, first to 5.25 and then for the final mile and a half I managed 5.15. I was pretty spent at the end, but not slowing.

I've never run such a good 18 miler. I think I'm still in good shape. Now I just need a good sharpening little taper before race day...

Thursday, 10 October 2013

More recovery

13M double; recovery runs x2
6M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

I changed my plans for today late in the day because I had stomach ache and wasn't in a state to run a session. In retrospect, I think I was just hungry. Anyway, it might be a good plan as I am now going to try to run my last long run tomorrow morning. That will give me two extra days between it and race day - probably overkill as it's the difference between 14 and 16 days recovery, but it can't hurt.

Wednesday, 9 October 2013

Recovery

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

I was feeling pretty good by my evening run. My legs are in a good state at the moment. Pretty resilient.

Tuesday, 8 October 2013

K reps

16M double; recovery run & K rep session
6M am recovery run
10M pm incl 10x1K off 90s jog

My legs are getting over Sunday now and with a bit of encouragement they managed a really good session in Regent's Park this evening. I feel I'm developing more speed again as I slowly introduce more rep sessions and decrease the volume in each of them. Ten K reps is still respectable, but I can push a lot harder than I could when my equivalent session was ten mile reps.

Under 3 weeks to go... I'm looking back at my build up before my 2.22 in April 2011 and thinking that I should try to mirror that (other than the two days off I had to take off 2 weeks out when I strained my hamstring hurdling a dog in the Regent's Park 10K).

Monday, 7 October 2013

Recovery

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

My legs are a bit sore for the first time in a while. Not in a bad way, just slightly tight all over. I'm pleased really, it tells me that yesterday was a really solid session. I went slow to and from work today. No dramas.

Sunday, 6 October 2013

23 mile hard crescendo run

23M am crescendo run at 6.45min/M (0-7M); 5.45 (7-15M); 5.30 (15-23M)

This will probably be my last hard, properly long run before race day. I'll have time for one more at 18ish miles maybe, but nothing like this.

I did it properly and pre-fuelled (early morning Yazoo), primed myself with coffee and Lucozade and took some more Lucozade at about 14 miles. My last session was on Thursday morning, so that also helped me feel pretty good from the get-go... even if the first segment didn't come out very speedy.

Once I decided to pick the pace up at 7 miles, I found I was running comfortably at under 5.50min/M. Sometimes by the time I get to the next pick up in pace (at 15 miles today), I find that I've already been straining a bit to maintain my pace, but today I was cruising really nicely at under 5.45 pace. And I found I was able to keep a nice relaxed style/rhythm while upping things to 5.35 pace and then while I slowly increased it to 5.30ish.

I had a bit of a stitch threatening for the last two miles. Not sure why. Other than that, I was pretty pleased with the run. Not an eyeballs out effort (mainly down to the stitch making me back off a bit at the end), but the final 16 miles were all at 5.45min/M or less and I was managing to build the speed as the miles passed.

A good end to a 120 mile week.

8, easy

8M am recovery run

Eight nice slow ones around the Heath and the Heath Extension this morning.

Friday, 4 October 2013

Steady

16M double; steady run & recovery run
9M am steady run
7M pm recovery run

I had clinic in Romford today, so I split my journey and ran to and from Stratford. My pack was pretty effing heavy for some reason and it was hard going, particularly in the morning.

It'd be nice to top things off with a really good long run over the weekend.

Thursday, 3 October 2013

A fairly good tempo

22M double; medium-long crescendo/tempo & recovery run
15M am incl 11M crescendo at 5.45-5.10min/M
7M pm recovery run

I had to really drag myself out of the front door this morning for this one. I was sleepy tired rather than physically tired, but I really wasn't relishing this. I ran gently down to work to drop off my bag and then picked up the pace as I headed down to the river and along to Battersea Park and back. As usual, the initial pick up in pace left me struggling to get the Garmin down to something half decent, before things got a bit easier. By the middle of the run I felt pretty good, cruising along at about 5.25min/M without too much of a push. Somehow though, I ran out of oomph a bit right at the end and my last mile started promisingly (just above 5min/M) and then fizzled out. I probably pushed too hard. And it is only 36 hours since my K reps. I had a headache by the end of my day at work and ran home very gently.

Wednesday, 2 October 2013

Steady

22M double; steady run & recovery run
15M am steady run
7M pm recovery run

I got up early for a steady couple of loops of the Heath before heading to work this morning. My legs could feel last night's session.  But given recent experience, I should be OK for my medium-long tempo tomorrow morning... which I am almost looking forward to (though only because it's these sessions I credit with my PB at the Great North).

Tuesday, 1 October 2013

K reps

15M double; recovery run & K rep session
7M am recovery run
8M pm incl 10x1K off 90s jog

I ran my evening session on the grass loop in Regent's Park tonight. I had just enough time to squeeze ten of them in. They felt good and fast. Hopefully these last four weeks will let me build more basic speed to add to what I feel has been a pretty good endurance-focused last two or three months.

Recovery

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

I felt surprisingly good on both my runs today - to and from work.

22 cracking Swiss miles

22M am crescendo run

I ran 28 laps of the same 1.2K as yesterday (plus a bit on the way to the park and back). I've never run a long one on such a short loop and thought I'd go crazy with the repetition by the end. I was pretty mind-numbed on the first few (slow) laps, but as I picked up the pace my ability to think dropped and the speed at which time passed seemed to increase. I also started to feel better - more energetic, after feeling tempted to bail out on the run and decide 4 sessions in the 7 days following my cold was a bad idea. I was encouraged to keep going and push hard by thoughts of the Berlin Marathon which was due to start soon after my run.

In the end, I think this was probably one of my better long runs. I didn't use a Garmin; but I was moving pretty well by the end of the first third, pushed harder than sometimes in the middle third and found the hypnotic repetitiveness of the final third helped me judge my pace and effort well. I had to find a park bench to sit on at the end - not a common occurrence - and my legs are still hurting twelve hours later.

Wilson Kipsang delivered his end of the bargain too. I'm getting really keyed up for the Frankfurt Marathon already, I was getting unreasonably excited reading the updates on Wilson and co on the letsrun message boards...

115 miles for the week I think.

Four weeks til Frankfurt.

Saturday, 28 September 2013

Steady

10M am steady run

I ran a fairly steady ten miler in Zurich this morning, around a 1.2K wood-chip loop in a nearby park. I'll see if I can stomach more than double the distance around the same loop tomorrow.

Friday, 27 September 2013

'Medium-long' crescendo

14M medium-long crescendo

We are off to Zurich for the weekend, so I squeezed in just one run this morning early-early - a crescendo 14 miler. My legs didn't feel in the mood only 36 hours after my mile reps in Wednesday evening, but they warmed up by about mile four and I converted what felt like it was going to be a wash-out into a decent crescendo effort.

I think my hard medium-long runs on the way to work have been one of the big differences with my training this summer/autumn. Previously, they have always been the ones to suffer when I get tired at high mileage, probably because they are both mentally and physically tough and as a result hard to deliver on mod-week. This one was not as good as some of my recent ones, but it wasn't a bad effort.

Wednesday, 25 September 2013

Easy

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

Two slow ones. The first one was through town as it was very early, very dark and very misty.

Mile reps

20M double; recovery run & mile rep session
6M am recovery run
14M pm incl 10x1M off 90s jog

My mile rep session was a blast from the past today - I ran it around Five Mile Drive Park, where I spent many an afternoon playing football and running (and not running) as a kid. Not a lot had changed, though I must be faster. The reps felt pretty good. The stitch did not return, which was a relief.

Monday, 23 September 2013

22 with surges (after three days off with a cold)

22M pm at 6.45min/M (0-4M); 6.00 (4-12M); 5.10/6.30 (alternating; 12-22M)

I've had three days off due to a cold - probably no coincidence after last week's race. Giving everything in a race leaves you pretty vulnerable immune system-wise I think.

Anyway, it was only a cold and only three days and I didn't feel like it had too much of a hangover effect today. I ran a long one along the river from North Oxford to (near) Abingdon and back. The first half was easy and then steady (6 min miling). The second half I ran alternate hard and steady miles on the way back. The first couple were really good. The next three were hampered by an intermittent stitch and the increasing darkness. But it was not a bad return after a few days off, so I won't grumble.

Thursday, 19 September 2013

Steady

12M am steady run

I only had time for one, slightly longer, steady run this morning. I ran along the river in Oxford from my parents' house to Iffley Lock and back via Godstow. I've got a bit of a sore throat, but nothing to stop this sort of run.

Wednesday, 18 September 2013

Ten mile reps

22M double; mile rep session & recovery run
15M am incl 10x1M off 90s jog
7M pm recovery run

My legs are back to normal surprisingly quickly after Sunday's race and I felt I was moving well in my mile reps this morning. Ten is a bit of a killer session, but I still had good rhythm at the end. They were Garmin-less, so it's hard to know my pace, but after my performance on Sunday I have greater confidence in the effectiveness of thg 'run-hard-by-feel' approach I've been taking to training (and racing).

Tuesday, 17 September 2013

Steady/recovery

17M double; steady run & recovery run
10M am steady run
7M pm recovery run

I held off on my session until tomorrow to recovery properly after Sunday. My calves were a little tighter this morning. But I should be fine by tomorrow.

Monday, 16 September 2013

Recovering... pretty well

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

I am still basking in the glow of satisfaction after yesterday's race and my legs are still full of running (and a bit of ache). I've had a happy day's running.

66.51 at the Great North Run!

20M incl 13.1M in 66m51s (5.06min/M; 23rd)

Today was just one of those days when I knew it was going to click. My light-ish (90M including today) and day and a half rest meant my legs felt great. But it was the excitement of my surroundings that really did it.

I shamelessly got a snap of myself with Kenenisa as I pitched up at the start and felt like I needed to keep pinching myself during the warm-up. Farah heading off one way, Bekele running up and down (very slowly) on the same patch of road as me. And Haile doing the same plus having a sneaky piss by the side of the road.

I had to bite my lip to stop it trembling on the start line. Mo and Bekele got away freely but Haile was boxed in right in front of me for the first little bit. It was surreal. I had my Casio on me and looked at it a few times, but didn't really pay it much attention. I slowed fractionally after 800m or so to join a group with some guys I knew would be aiming for 65-67 pace (the group in front was already heading away and I didn't want to work to hard in the crosswind that we had at that stage.

The pace felt right. As usual, I struggled/fell back on each hill bit caught the pack again on the downs. By five miles (the highest part of the course), the group started to fragment and I was pushing at the front while we began to catch stragglers from the group ahead.

The splits are a bit hard to interpret because of the hills and changing wind, but I sped up from 10-15K (1st 2 5K splits roughly 16.00, 3rd was 15.40ish) and overall my 2nd half was faster than my first by 24 seconds. At eight to nine miles there was another hill and, though we were catching more stragglers and I was still moving well, the two remaining guys in my group pushed on and gained about 20 seconds on me over a couple of miles.

At 10 miles my split was 50.55 and I knew 66 minutes something was possible if I really pushed. Added to that carrot, I could see Meucci (European 10,000 Silver medalist) looming ahead. I passed him just after 11 miles and buried myself all the way to the finish, knowing I was keeping the pace up despite the arrival of the rain and the return of the crosswind (it had been behind us from about 6-10 miles).

As usual for me at the moment, I was left heaving from the effort as I crossed the line and fell on some convenient grass gently sobbing with delight. I would have been happy with 67-anything. 66.51  combined with the chance to meet (I chatted to him v briefly afterwards) and race Bekele was just magical.

I think I've written more than necessary. But I think in about ten years I will re-read this and still smile.

Rest ahead of the Great North Run

I hear it'll be stormy tomorrow for the race, bit I still suspect a PB is within reach. I feel in good shape. And my 10K PB came into horizontal hail and over hills last December. Plus, tomorrow's course is point-to-point and with luck the wind will be at least partly behind us.

It might be a bit confusing to pace, with the first mile fairly downhill, so I think I will revert to the watch-free, run by feel approach that I am more confident that I have mastered thanks to last year's cross-country successes.

More importantly in terms of what I think I can achieve, warming up and racing alongside Kenenisa Bekele (in particular) will give me such a rush, that it could be one of those days where I outperform my own expectations. I am SO excited. It's days like tomorrow that I dream of as I kill myself in training each week (but which I know could easily never have happened). There could be tears on the start line... (live on BBC1!)

Seven, slowly

7M am recovery run

A nice, gentle run in this morning. My legs are feeling up for the race already.

Thursday, 12 September 2013

Two gentle sevens

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

I'm keeping it nice and light until Sunday now. My legs are feeling pretty good already. Hopefully they'll stay that way. Today, I ran to and from work the seven mile route via the Heath, Primrose Hill, Regent's Park etc.

I'm not sure how often I'll be on the same start list as Bekele, Gebresalassie and Farah, so I've been repeatedly admiring my name on Sunday's start list...

Wednesday, 11 September 2013

Eight K reps

16M double; K rep session & recovery run
10M am incl 8x1K off 90s jog
6M pm recovery run

I ran some more K reps on the grass loop in Regent's Park this morning. My legs are still feeling good and I managed to push pretty hard. I wanted to keep the volume fairly low to save myself for Sunday. It was probably about right.

Tuesday, 10 September 2013

Steady

17M double; steady run & recovery run
10M am steady run
7M pm recovery run

My legs felt full of energy all day. Hopefully the week will continue like this and end with a PB...

Monday, 9 September 2013

More mile reps... on a Monday

16M double; recovery run & mile rep session
7M am recovery run
9M pm incl 6x1M off 90s jog

I ran a session this evening to get myself a day ahead of my usual schedule and therefore leave an extra day for pre-race recovery later in the week. I ran six good mile reps in Regent's Park on my way home (without my bag).

Sunday, 8 September 2013

22M steady

Ahead of the Great North Run next weekend, I held back on this one a bit. So enjoyable, just cruising along mulling things over.

Saturday, 7 September 2013

Just 7

7M am recovery run

Nice and easy this morning. In refreshing light rain. And sun. In the Heath.

Friday, 6 September 2013

Another solid mile rep session

23M double; mile rep session & recovery urn
16M am incl 10x1M off 90s jog
7M pm recovery run

I really struggled to drag myself out of bed this morning for a pre-work session. I ended up running it along the Embankment. It turns out that it's about a mile between Blackfriars and Westminster, which meant I didn't need to keep an eye on my watch and let me focus on the running.

I felt pretty crappy on my first two reps and was wondering how many I'd manage, but once I got to five my legs had freed up nicely and I was bashing them out at a fairly even pace. My last one was a bit ropey after I'd pushed hard on my penultimate one to keep the times even. My legs were pretty stuffed all day and the evening run was SLOW.

Thursday, 5 September 2013

Steady

20M double; steady run & recovery run
15M am steady run
5M pm recovery run

A steady one early this morning, through the misty Heath mainly. My legs were tired this evening.

Wednesday, 4 September 2013

Recovery

14M double; recovery run x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

Two easy ones to and from work - well earned recovery.

Tuesday, 3 September 2013

A good 15 mile crescendo run

20M double; medium-long crescendo run & recovery run
15M am crescendo at 7.30 (0-2M); 6 (3-5); 5.30 (6-10); 5.20 (10-13); 5.07 (14); 1M jog
5M pm recovery run

Another early morning session - my alarm went off at 5.30.

I felt pretty light-legged from the outset and though I felt the usual doubts as I started to raise the pace, I found I was hitting better speeds than on my previous runnings of this route. From mile 6 onwards I was at or under 5.30 and sustained 5.20 for miles 10-13 with enough in hand that the final mile was 5.07. Having said that, I did have to really push for the 5.07 and I was bent double and heaving on my empty stomach in front of the traffic on the Embankment at Temple when I stopped! Classy...

Monday, 2 September 2013

Recovery

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

Two easy runs. My legs were heavy this morning. But not bad by the evening.

Sunday, 1 September 2013

22 mile crescendo run

22M am crescendo run

No Garmin (I forgot to charge it), but pleasingly fresh legs meant that I'll never know if this one was as good as it felt. I felt really fresh as I upped the pace and lengthened my stride over the last third of this one. It feels like my endurance is coming along really well. So long as my speed is up to scratch, I feel in the shape to aim for a PB at the Great North Run in two weeks.

Saturday, 31 August 2013

Seven (after 36hrs off)

7M pm recovery run

I kept it nice and slow this evening after my 36hrs off. Long one tomorrow.

Friday, 30 August 2013

Mile reps

13M am incl 10x1M off 90s jog

I repeated last Friday's mile rep session along the canal to Stratford but added in an extra three reps around Victoria Park to make it a ten rep session. Like last week, I had my pack on. And like last week, I think it was pretty good.

I'm now taking a 36hr rest (the equivalent of a day off, but from this morning til tomorrow evening).

Thursday, 29 August 2013

Steady

19M double; steady run & recovery run
12M am steady run
7M pm recovery run

Another early one today, around the Heath one and a half times and then to work. Steadily.

Wednesday, 28 August 2013

A good medium-long tempo around the Heath

22M double; medium-long tempo run & recovery run
15M am with miles 1-12 at tempo (no Garmin)
7M pm recovery run

I prized myself out of bed at 5.20 this morning to give me enough time to run this one hard. I am so slow to warm up in the mornings, I need about 15 minutes walking around the house before my muscles are the right length, let alone have the ability to run.

I ran twice around my usual loop that runs around the perimeter of the Heath on the roads and then to work. I warmed up on the section from home to Swains Lane and then picked up the effort. My legs felt great. Really great, the whole way. I had a really positive rhythm, particularly on the flat sections in the second half (though without a Garmin, I don't know what my actual pace was).

Tuesday, 27 August 2013

Another recovery day

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

I've recovered pleasingly after Sunday's 28 miler. I only held off on a session this evening because I couldn't leave work in time to fit in a proper one. I'll run a medium-long tempo in the morning.

Monday, 26 August 2013

Recovery

13M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
6M pm recovery run

Two slow ones on a bank holiday. Around and through the Heath.

Sunday, 25 August 2013

28 steady

28M am long run at 6.30-6.20min/M

I ran another properly long one this morning - 28 miles steadily. I warmed up for a couple of miles before picking it up to 6.30 pace. For the rest of the run I kept the pace fairly even, but slowly speeding up towards 6.20min/M. I didn't want to push it.

I had pre-fuelled and had a Lucozade at half distance, which probably helped me feel a fair bit better than on the steady 26.2 I ran a few weeks ago. Over the last 8 or 9 miles, my legs began to hurt. It was a general, burning, fatigue-type ache and they weren't tight and I could keep the pace up just by concentrating on keeping good form. Hopefully this will help my endurance and give me confidence in the later stages of the race.

Saturday, 24 August 2013

Easy

12M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
5M pm recovery run

Two gentle ones in and around the Heath today. My legs are feeling ready for a solid one tomorrow.

Friday, 23 August 2013

Seven mile reps to Stratford

17M double; mile rep session & recovery run
10M am incl 7x1M off 90s
7M pm recovery run

I was in clinic out East today (Romford, not Shanghai), so I ran to Stratford along the canal with my pack and put in some pretty good mile reps. I added a loop in Victoria Park, so the run was 10 miles in total with 7 mile reps. I was cream crackered on my plod home (along the canal again from Mile End).

Thursday, 22 August 2013

Recovery

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

Two slow ones. I need the recovery I can tell you.

Wednesday, 21 August 2013

Steady (and fairly long) early on a Wednesday

22M double; medium-long steady(ish) run & recovery run
15M am steady (in parts)
7M pm recovery run

I got up early and ran another steadyish fifteen miler first thing this morning. It was steady in parts but fairly slow in others. I was pretty tired the morning after a K rep session.

Tuesday, 20 August 2013

K reps in Regent's Park

14M double; recovery run & K rep session
6M am recovery run
8M incl 10x1K off 90s jog

Another Tuesday, another tight schedule and another K rep session squeezed in on the way home, looping f around the grass circuit near the Hub in Regent's Park. My legs felt pretty fast I think.

Monday, 19 August 2013

Recovery

13M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
6M pm recovery run

I ran nice and slow today, but felt ok. No niggles still.

Sunday, 18 August 2013

Summary of week ending 18/08/2013

Mon 12/08 - 14M double; 7M recovery runs x2
Tue 13/08 - 16M double; 6M recov & 10M incl 10x1K off 90s jog
Wed 14/08 - 22M double; 15M steady & 7M recovery runs
Thu 15/08 - 22M double; 15M crescendo run (finishing at 5.20min/M) & 7M recov
Fri 16/08 - 22M double; 15M steady & 7M recovery runs
Sat 17/08 - Rest
Sun 18/08 - 21M crescendo run at 7.15-6.20-5.55-5.35-5.30min/M
TOTAL - 117M

A gritty twenty-one miler

21M am crescendo run at 7.15 (0-3M); 6.20 (3-7M); 5.55 (7-14M); 5.35-30 (14-21M)

You would have thought a rest day and an evening feeling inspired watching the World Champs marathon would have put my legs in murderous mood for my long run. And I did feel pretty good as I headed out and at 5.55 pace in the middle section I was cruising without pushing, even over the cobbles in Wapping. But it turned into a real grinding, sapping session as I got into the final quarter. By the end I had whole body ache (though no specific tightness), not unlike at the end of last week's 26.2.

I was well hydrated (before - though I think I should start adding refuelling mid-run now) and I didn't go that hard early on (though a bit harder than sometimes). The final segment still held together just about ok despite the struggle.

Along the canal I hit 5.35-5.30 despite the obstructions and little rises at locks. The segment through Angel is always slow so I ignored the time and just tried to keep as much rhythm as I could. And the last mile and a half (up the hill from the canal home) was slower, but at 5.55 is faster than I usually manage when running at 5.30 effort.

I am now an immobile wreck.

I've run 117 miles this week (in six days of running)... These are the weeks that might bring a solid time in Frankfurt into reach.

Saturday, 17 August 2013

Rest!

Not. A. Jot. Of. Running. Today.

Friday, 16 August 2013

Steady again

22M double; steady run & recovery run
15M am steady run
7M pm recovery run

I ran pretty much the same as Wednesday really. But felt more tired. Luckily Mo wasn't the recipient of voodoo-style sluggish vibes from me.

Rest day tomorrow. My first in a while. And I think I'll benefit from it. I've run 135 miles in the last seven days.

Thursday, 15 August 2013

Another Thursday morning medium-long crescendo run

22M double; medium-long crescendo run & recovery run
15M am with 2M warm up; 6.00min/M (2-5M); 5.35-5.20 (5-14M); 1M warm down
7M pm recovery run

I ran pretty much the same session as last Thursday again, though with more tired legs. As with last time, the initial speed up to 6min/mile pace was an effort after only two miles of warm up, but I got going pretty well and once I got to the open spaces of Hyde Park, hit a pace of 5.30 fairly easily - before that my route is pretty zig-zaggy and involves road crossings left right and centre. I slowly upped the pace from there so that the last three miles were at 5.20 pace. I didn't quite have the oomph to hit a 5.07 final mile like last week (and the wheels started to come off a bit the final few hundred metres) but I mustn't grumble...

I was shattered on my way home.

Wednesday, 14 August 2013

Steady

22M double; steady run & recovery run
15M am steady run
7M pm recovery run

I ran a long-ish steady-ish run this morning around the Heath and on my way to work. The steadiness came from its hills rather than that much speed in the flat. But it should still have been a solid general aerobic workout.

Tuesday, 13 August 2013

K reps in Regent's Park on the way home

16M double; recovery run & K rep session
6M am recovery run
10M pm incl 10x1K hard off 90s jog

I am feeling good still and ran what felt like a pretty swift kilometre rep session on my way home from work around the grass loop near the Hub in Regent's Park. The grass is cut short and the ground is firm, so it's a great surface for it. And there was some cricket to watch during my recovery jogs.

Monday, 12 August 2013

Recovery (feeling good)

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

I'm feeling pretty great considering my last week. Slightly achy quads thanks to Saturday's speed, but no adverse reaction to yesterday's long-un. And I was full of beans on both of my runs today once I got going

Sunday, 11 August 2013

26.2 mainly at a reasonable pace

26.2M am 0-3M warm-up 4-26.2M at 6.14mun/M

I decided to fit in a proper long run this morning to end what feels like one of my best ever weeks of training. I find running a full marathon in training is a good way of removing the fear factor from racing it. I ate well last night and drank a pint of milk in the middle of the night amd a glass of squash before starting to prepare myself, butI  didn't eat or drink at all during the run (partly because I didn't want to stop and partly to show myself I have plenty of reserves).

I ran the first three miles nice and easy amd then picked my pace up to a bit under 6.30 per mile. I then very gradually increased it. I ended up averaging 6.14min/M for the last 23.2 miles. I probably ran the last 15 miles at a pretty even 6.10min/M. It felt pretty easy legs and breathing wise. I wasn't at all tight and didn't have to push to keep the pace up, though by the time I finished I felt a bit hot, generally achy and pleased to finish (but better than I've felt before on these sorts of runs).

All in all, it was a good end to a 125 mile week (my 2nd biggest ever I think).

A bit of speed on a Saturday

13M double; surge session & recovery run
7M am incl 20 min surge session
6M pm recovery run

I felt like making a good week of it and take advantage of my energised legs this morning by running the surge session Danny taught me last year. It's faster than my usual sessions but also less arduous. It's the one that goes 90s hard-90s steady-90s hard-90s steady and so on with four lots of 60s hard/steady, 4 lots of 30s and 4 lots of 15s. By the end it feels pretty bad. I ran it up Swain's Lane and then along the road at the top of the Heath before jogging back home through a meandering route through the Heath.

Recovery

14M double; recovery runs x2
6M am recovery run
8M pm recovery run

Two easy runs today. I felt pretty ok, in fact quite springy by the evening.

Thursday, 8 August 2013

A proper 'medium-long' crescendo run

22M double; medium-long crescendo run & recovery run
15M am crescendo at ~7min/M (0-2M); 6.00-5.07min/M (3-14M); ~9 (15M)
7M pm recovery run

I got up early again to get in my session before work. I ran with my Garmin and, despite a full two miles of warm up, my attempt to lift the pace to 6min/M made me very aware of how long I take to warm up. It was a real push for the first mile or so and I was just beginning to think I might have to accept I was having a bad day and settle for a poor session. But by the time I arrived at Hyde Park (5 and a bit miles in), 6 minute miling was beginning to feel comfortable. I upped my pace gradually so that by eight miles in I was cruising along at 5.40 pace without too much effort. I kept upping the effort, so I ran the miles from 9 to 14 (down Birdcage Walk and then up and down the river to Temple via the Lambeth and Millenium Bridges) in 5.30-5.30-5.20-5.20-5.07. I was tired at the end, but not dead, and jogged the last mile as a warm down.

I've run 129 miles in the last 7 days.

Recovery

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M am recovery run

Two easy ones today to and from work along the usual route other than a diversion via Chiltern Street in Marylebone to check out what's there. I'd heard it's where it's at for hip shopping... having seen it, I'm not sure unless u want a saxophone or a stale croissant.

Ten mile reps in the early morning

22M double; mile rep session & recovery run
15M am incl 10x1M off 90s jog
7M pm recovery run

I'm aiming to make some of my reps sessions higher volume in the coming weeks and this was the first. I ran mile-ish reps around the Heath perimeter (I actually just ran 5.10-20 each time rather than knowing the distance, hence '-ish'). I managed to judge the effort pretty well and I don't think the early morningness made them too slow other than my first rep (which was up Swain's Lane and was never destined to be a good one).

I am really feeling the miles this week. I skulked around the corridors at work and was dead slow again on my recovery run home.

Monday, 5 August 2013

Much needed recovery

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

110 miles last week, ending with a hard 23 miler left me pretty shattered today. Both runs were dead slow. Nothing feels injured though. My hamstrings felt a bit tight first thing, but eased off.

Summary of week ending 04/08/2013

Mon 29/7 - 10M double; 7M & 3M recovery runs
Tue 30/7 - 25M double; 7M am recov & 18M pm incl 6x1M off 90s jog
Wed 31/7 - 12M double; 7M & 5M recovery runs
Thu 1/8 - 6M double; 3M recovery runs x2
Fri 2/8 - 22M double; 15M incl 12M crescendo/tempo & 7M recov run
Sat 3/8 - 12M double; 6M recovery runs x2
Sun 4/8 - 23M crescendo long run
TOTAL - 110M

23 mile crescendo run (a bit harder)

23M am crescendo at 6.45-5.55-5.30

This is my first Garmin-timed long run of the campaign, so I was a bit nervous and standoffish at the beginning.

My general aim is to run the first third nice and gently, just as preparation for the rest of the run and to get some miles on the board, the second third at a respectable pace, but not pushing, and the final third at the limit of what I can achieve without tearing anything or compromising the next week.

This spring, I was managing 5.20 miling for decent chunks of the final third. I stuck with 5.30 mailing today, but could hold it fine (if you count puffing hard and feeling a bit sick as fine) on the flat of the canal and held a similar effort the last mile and a half up the hill home. I was pretty pleased with it. And the post-run glow.

Saturday, 3 August 2013

Recovery

12M double; recovery runs x2
6M am recovery run
6M pm recovery run

Two easy ones around the Heath. Legs heavy. Not sure how ready I'll be for the long run in the morning.

Friday, 2 August 2013

Medium-long tempo

22M double; medium-long tempo & recovery run
15M am incl 12M crescendo/tempo
7M pm recovery run

I had more time to fit in running today. I got up early and ran twice around the perimeter of the Heath with the first two miles as warm up and the rest either fairly hard (miles 2 - 6) or properly hard (miles 6 -12). The last three miles were a gentle jog to work after a brief pause at home.

I was shattered all day and at the beginning of my run home. It was the sort of run where you feel better at the end ham re beginning despite still feeling pretty rubbish.

Thursday, 1 August 2013

Recovery

12M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run

I'm tired after yesterday. But still in one piece. And full of excitement having read that I'll hopefully get to line up with Kenenisa Bekele as well as Haile G and Mo Farah at the Great North Run.

Tuesday, 30 July 2013

Mile reps around Battersea Park

25M double; recovery run & long run incl mile reps
7M am recovery run
18M pm long run incl 6x1M off 90s jog (& a set and a bit of tennis)

I ran a weird session this evening, a bit like I ran fairly often in 2011 when I had to get back to Brixton from a north London speed session.. This time it was because I was trying to fit a session in to a busy evening that also included a game of tennis in Battersea.

The mile reps were squeezed in after a five mile run to Battersea and before my tennis (which was followed by a run home). The reps were pretty solid I think. It's a really good route around the perimeter of Battersea Park. I hit a pace of about 5min/mile and held it for all of the (just).

Monday, 29 July 2013

Easy

10M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
3M pm recovery run

My legs felt a bit battered this morning when I set out thanks to yesterday's long run. But they got going well and I was pretty springy by the time I got to work and again on my way home. I only had time for a very short one this evening - I had to pick up the small one.

Sunday, 28 July 2013

Summary of week ending 28/07/2013

Mon 22/7 - 12M double; 7M & 5M recovery runs
Tue 23/7 - 14M double; 9M am mixed rep session & 5M pm recov
Wed 24/7 - 12M am medium long crescendo run
Thu 25/7 - 14M double; 7M recovery runs x2
Fri 26/7  - 16M double; 9M am incl 6x1M off 90s & 7M pm recov
Sat 27/7 - 10M double; 6M & 4M recovery runs
sun 28/7 - 23M am crescendo run
TOTAL - 101M

Twenty-three mile crescendo run

23M am crescendo run

I got up at something to do with five to fit my long run in this morning ahead of other plans. On the positive side, the streets were empty and it was cool enough to let me really go for it. I ran the same route as the last few weeks but with an extra loop in Hyde Park to give me some extra distance. I over-did it and added three rather than two miles, so I ran 23 miles in total.

Endurance at a steady pace isn't a problem now that I've strung five long runs in a row. Endurance at speed is what I need to work on now...

I ran without my Garmin again and just went on effort, but it felt good. The middle (6.15ish miling) third felt good. And through the final third, I felt like I could keep pushing hard and didn't start tightening.

101 miles for the week!

Saturday, 27 July 2013

Some recovery miles

10M double; recovery runs x2
6M am recovery run
4M pm recovery run

My legs felt beaten up this morning but were much better by the end of the day. Hopefully they'll be ready for a long one in the morning.

Friday, 26 July 2013

Mile reps to Stratford

16M double; mile reps & recovery run
9M am incl 6x1M off 90s jog
7M pm recovery run

It's another Romford clinic day and I wanted to get another rep session in ahead of the weekend, so I tried some mile reps along the canal to Stratford wearing my pack. They went better than they might, though it's never the same with a pack. More like hill reps really - I had shoes, clothes and a laptop on board. Still, my legs got a good going over. And there is a Greggs near the station in Stratford so I could refuel on a Belgian bun.

The way home was a new variation. I got off the overground at Homerton and ran down to the canal at Victoria Park and then home the usual route. I was cream crackered.

Thursday, 25 July 2013

Easy - on tired legs

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

My legs deserved their rest today. My two runs were very relaxed.

Ron and I had a really useful discussion over dinner about my training over the next few months... building towards the Frankfurt Marathon on 27th October. High mileage is coming my way very shortly.

Wednesday, 24 July 2013

Twelve mile crescendo run

12M am crescendo run

My legs are good this week, so I'm cashing in with plenty of hard running. I could only feel a bit of yesterday's run in my quads and that was gone by the time I'd warmed up. I ran two loops of the Heath perimeter, the first third gently, the middle third fairly swiftly and the final third hard.

Tuesday, 23 July 2013

Another sharp little early morning session

14M double; rep session & recovery run
9M am incl 5M of 400m-1.2M reps off 90s jog
5M pm recovery run

I ran a similar session to the one a did on Friday morning again today. Reps, around the perimeter of the Heath. They were deliberately more variable in length today, with the longest at about 6 minutes and the shortest somewhere around 400m. The persistent glow in my quads more than twelve hours later tells me it was a good one.

It was made more refreshing by the heavy rain and hail showers that were passing. Sadly, those had gone by the time of my ultra-sweaty-ultra-slow evening run.

Monday, 22 July 2013

Recovery

12M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
5M pm recovery run

My legs are more together than I might have expected after yesterday. By the evening, they felt positively good.

Twenty mile crescendo run

20M am crescendo long run

I was scared before I started my run this morning. It takes a few of these hard long runs to get your confidence up and I've not hit one hard since February.

I didn't have my Garmin (battery failure heading out the door), so I ran it by feel. I used the same route as the last two weeks - 20 miles with the last 8 or 9 mainly along the canal back from Limehouse. It's a better route than I've had in my repertoire since we moved to NW5. The routes I've used before have involved 4 miles up hill at the end (from the river) rather than the 1.5 this one involves.

I ran the first couple of miles easy (probably 7.30 miling), the next five or six nice and steady (more like 6.30 miling), the middle six or seven miles (from Hyde Park Corner to Mile End Road) at something that felt like 6.00 and the final six or seven at about 5.30. The whole run came out at about 6.15 pace, which means my estimates were probably fairly close to the mark.

I didn't feel at all tight by the end and was still full of running. Which tells me I'm ready for some proper training.

92 miles this week.

Saturday, 20 July 2013

Just six on a Saturday

6M am steady run

I 've not run on a Saturday in ages. In my good patch of form earlier this year, I was taking one day off every 2 or 3 weeks. It'd be good to get back to that pattern.

Friday, 19 July 2013

A sharp little session to start Friday

9M double; rep session & short steady run
6M am incl 8x800m-1K hard off 90s
3M pm steady

I had less time than I might have this morning for my run, despite getting up at 5. So it was a shortish, sharpish affair. My afternoon run was earlier than usual too and as a result was VERY sweaty despite being so short.

Thursday, 18 July 2013

Steady

15M double; steady run & recovery run
10M am steady run
5M pm recovery run

I ran at a fairly decent pace around the Heath perimeter and to work this morning. And nice and easily home. Fooof, it's hot!

Wednesday, 17 July 2013

Parliament Hill reps before the heat arrived

16M double; hill rep session & recovery run
11M am incl 8x1.3K up/down Hill reps in 5.04-5.15 off 90s jog
5M pm sweaty recovery run

I got up just before six this morning to get my session in before it was hot. It's all relative and I was still a sweaty mes by the end of my first three reps, but it was way better than doing them later in the day. I ran a slightly longer route up and down Parliament Hill to follow a path cut in the long grass, so my reps were probably a bit closer to my times of six months ago... bit still with room for improvement.

I can't tell you how sweaty I was at the end of my recovery run this evening. Luckily it ended at Ruby Violet with a refreshing (chilli chocolate) ice cream.

Recovery

14M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
7M pm recovery run

Two sweaty slow runs. My morning one looping around the Heath and then the direct route to work. My evening run through Regent's Park, Primrose Hill and the Heath. I'm feeling pretty full of running.

Sunday, 14 July 2013

Twenty again

20M am steady long run

I felt better again on today's long run. Not too hot thanks to a fairly early start. No tightness (or real tiredness) by the end. I'm ready to start increasing my long run pace now.

89 miles for the week...

Friday, 12 July 2013

Early morning tempo

15M double; tempo run & recovery run
10M am including 7M at tempo
5M pm recovery run

I was not in the mood for my run this morning - sleepy. I coaxed myself out the door with a coffee and found I my legs felt much better than yesterday. I ran the same route as last Friday, around the top of the Heath, starting with another race with a bike up Swain's Lane. I ran hard from there to Baker Street (seven miles) and then warmed down to work.

My evening run was a slow, sweaty recovery run to Ruby Violet for ice cream with Y&H.

Thursday, 11 July 2013

Steady

15M double; recovery run & steady run
5M am recovery run
10M pm steady run

I ran steady this evening ahead of a session in the early morning cool tomorrow. Ten miles feels fine again now.

Wednesday, 10 July 2013

12M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
5M pm recovery run

I felt pretty shattered today after last night's session.

Tuesday, 9 July 2013

Oof! Nausea inducing mile reps

15M double; recovery run & mile rep session
5M am recovery run
10M pm incl 4x1M off 4min and 6x75m downhill sprints

It was a tough session this evening at the track. Four hours later, I am still bobbing along under a film of lactate and feel sick when I stand up too fast.

We ran mile reps off too much recovery for my liking, meaning that the pace was more brutal than my legs are currently comfortable with. My reps came in at 4.54-5.04. Then we finished with some down hill sprints.

Monday, 8 July 2013

Recovery

12M double; recovery runs x2
7M am recovery run
5M pm recovery run

I kept it easy today after yesterday's 20 miler. My body is still getting used to the mileage, so am am being careful. Last week I notched up 75 miles. My target this week will be 80-90. And I might Ryan a slightly faster long run. I'm gearing up nicely towards a solid block of training and some proper fitness.

Sunday, 7 July 2013

Twenty

20M am steady long run

I'm definitely getting my endurance back. This week, I upped the distance to twenty miles and felt pretty fresh by the end whereas last week I was tightening in various places from the fifteen mile point (and ran eighteen in total).

I ran a big loop including the canal, a fair chunk of the Thames and the usual Hyde Park, Regent's Park, Primrose Hill, Heath segment.

Friday, 5 July 2013

A decent tempo run

16M double; tempo session & recovery run
10M am incl 7M tempo
6M pm recovery run

I ran a decent seven miles at tempo this morning on my way in to work. I warmed up for a K or so and then headed around the perimeter of the Heath and then through Primrose Hill and Regent's Park. Even in the down hill sections I managed to persuade my legs to keep going at a good speed. My morning at work was augmented by the post-session endorphin rush. I may have been a bit irritatingly chirpy.

Slowly increasing the distance on my reps

11M double; recovery run & rep session
5M am recovery run
6M pm incl 10x800ish m off 90s jog

I'm slowly increasing the mileage on my rep sessions. Today, I increased it to 5 miles of hard running, with about a mile of jog interspersed. The first three miles were on the route home and the second three on the Heath. The two reps I ran up Parliament Hill were gut wrenching.

Monday, 1 July 2013

Just five

5M am recover run

Nice and easy to work this morning. I'm less stiff thanh after last week's long run but still need to be cautious.

Sunday, 30 June 2013

Eighteen early for my birthday

18M am easy

I got up at something with a 5 in it to squeeze in a long one before the day started. It was my birthday present to myself! Yes, I'm a freak.

It was great. And included Parliament Hill, Primrose Hill, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, Parliament Square, Birdcage Walk and a loop around Hyde Park and Kensington Palace Gardens.

It took me up to 63 miles for the week. My biggest in ages. Aiming for 70-80 next week.

Friday, 28 June 2013

Nine, steady to Stratford

9M am steady run

I ran fairly hard to Stratford this morning along the canal with my computer and clothes in my pack. I was in a near-race breathing rhythm a fair amount of the way.

Thursday, 27 June 2013

Fartlek back from Southwark

10.5M double; recovery run & fartlek session
5M am recovery run
5.5M pm fartlek session with 100-800m bursts

I went to an exhibition in Southwark after work, so used the longer run home for a session. I need a tempo run at some point this week, but it wasn't really a goer with all those road crossings, so I ran a fartlek session. It wasn't the best, but not bad considering the circumstances.

Wednesday, 26 June 2013

Tuesday, 25 June 2013

More like a proper rep session (on the way home)

10M double; recovery run & 800m rep session
5M am recovery run
5M pm incl 8x800ish metres off 90s jog (mostly)

I managed more like a proper rep session on my way home today - the first time I've done this since Hana arrived. Generally, I've been running five 800 or so metre reps along the direct, three mile route home. This time I followed the same route but then headed into the Heath for an extra three reps. I'll extend it further (another two reps for now) in the coming weeks, but I didn't want to risk things after my run on Sunday from which my legs are still a bit tight.

Monday, 24 June 2013

Just six

6M am recovery run

I ran a nice gentle six in the Chelmsford countryside before clinic today. Quads and hamstrings still tightish (but fine).

Sunday, 23 June 2013

Sixteen and half after a holiday

16.5M am steady long run

We're back from our holiday - carbo loaded but without any miles notched up (other than pushing a buggy)... So I got up early early for a longish run at a steady pace before the day started. Great running weather. I concocted a new route including the usual route around the Heath followed by convoluted loops inside the Inner Circle and then to work (to pick up some files on my memory stick to clinic in Chelmsford tomorrow - though I should think GCHQ already have them).

My legs felt tight at the beginning. And at the end. I think it was mainly due to the exertion of carrying our cases down tons of steps to the car yesterday.

Friday, 14 June 2013

A short rep session on the way home

8M double; recovery run & short reps session
5M am recovery run
3M pm incl 5x800m-ish reps off 90s jog

No time for a proper evening session today between work and home and out for dinner with his Hugificence. So I ran the session that has been my recent staple: 800 or so metre reps off 90 seconds jog along the direct three mile route home. It was a good one.

So far I've run 51 miles over the first five days of this week - and my legs have noticed the step up.

10 steady

10M am steady run with pack

I ran a ten miler at a steady pace this morning before clinic. My pack wasn't too full, but my legs were still a bit moody after Tuesday.

Wednesday, 12 June 2013

Short and steady

10M double; recovery run & steady run
5M am recovery run
5M pm steady run

My legs are fully aware of last night's session, so today was a bit of a struggle. I went gently in the morning but somehow ended up pushing along at a steadier pace on the way home. The last three or so miles are uphill and were pathetically hard work.

Tuesday, 11 June 2013

Mile reps at Parliament Hill with the Highgate crowd!

15M double; recovery run & mile rep session
5M am recovery run
10M pm incl 5x1M off 4min recovery at 5.54-5.08min/M

Look, 15 miles in a day! This is proper training...

My general pattern at the moment is to get home at 5.45-6 o'clock and we get Hana ready for bed by not long after 7. So I think I'm going to try to run one of my sessions a week at 7.15 or so and then have a later dinner.

This works well for joining in on the Highgate sessions on a Tuesday. I've not joined these much for nearly a year now due to a mixture of business at work and concern that my calves would play up again with too much track running.

Today's session was not on the track, but on a mile loop nearby. We ran five one mile reps off a chunky four minutes recovery. This meant we could really kill ourselves on each rep... not a good recipe for me given the lack of oomph in my legs right now. But great training. Even though we started late, I was still home for dinner by 8.30. Tidy.

Oh how I have missed the pained afterglow of mashed legs...

Monday, 10 June 2013

Recovery

8M double; recovery runs x2
5M am recovery run
3M pm recovery run

One of the advantages of hard training should be more of these proper recovery days. I'm going to try to switch my standard run to five miles rather than three - three to/from work and an extra two mile loop on the Heath.

Sunday, 9 June 2013

Back on the road to real fitness... at 5.45 on a Sunday

8M am incl 8x1.2K up & down Parliament Hill reps in 5m12s-5m22s off 90s jog

So I'm going to get properly fit again! My aim is to be fully fit in time to try for a PB in the Great North Run on September 15th... and then potentially a marathon in October (I've entered both Amsterdam and Frankfurt which are in the last two weeks of October and will decide closer to the time which will suit me better).

I'm going to have to be a bit more creative in terms of when I fit in my running. As the lady in Kwik-Fit put it, I'm a family man... And that means I don't really want to be disappearing off for hours on end from home.

But Hana seems to be a good sleeper, so I took advantage of that this morning by waking early (5.45) and heading out of the door for some Parliament Hill reps. I managed to mash out 8 not very fast but plenty painful reps.

I got home again before Hana and Yasmin had woken, a real success and encouragement that I'll be able to manage a proper training pattern without disrupting home life too much. I've never been the biggest sleeper, so as long as Hana remains a good sleeper I think the early morning option is a sustainable one.

Easy on a Friday

6M double; recovery runs x2

3M pm recovery run

My legs were not in the mood for anything but slow running today.

A great night to return to the track

10M incl 10K track race in 32m44s

What a night! I hadn't raced on the track since I was 17 (...19 years ago). And even then never raced more than four laps...

It was an amazing way to get back to it. Twenty-five laps on home turf with amazing support, black and white maracas shaking all around the perimeter, motivational tunes at the 200m mark, a jazz band and the dulcet tones of Aitken and Noad on commentary. Did I miss anything? Nothing other than a bit of Pochee stardust.

The hairs were standing up on the back of my neck on the first few laps as we headed out in our paced groups. And that was just me, in the B race, in no kind of racing shape.

The A race was amazing to watch. The party atmosphere turned into a frenzy of excitement on the final laps. And it was great to catch up with so many people from Highgate and across the country I've not seen, or run with, in a while.

Two easy runs, my second via the track where I caught up with Ron and some of the Highgate contingent. Excitement is building ahead of Thursday's race. And I'm nearly ready myself now I have my Highgate tracksuit and hoody!

Some more short reps

6M double; recovery run & 400m-ish reps
3M am recovery run
6M pm incl 9x400m-ish reps off 45s jog

I kept my reps short again tonight to get some extra speed in my legs ahead of Thursday's track 10,000m race. I'm really looking forward to it - it sounds like it'll be a night to make you proud to be part of Highgate. Pity I'm not in the shape I was in four months ago or I think it be one to slash big chunks off a PB. I'm going to be in the B race and targeting (just) sub-32 minutes.

9 to Stratford

9M am steady run

I ran to Stratford again this morning to get a few more miles under my belt (and to get me on my way to Romford). I took it steady with a heavy pack.

Shorter reps

6M double; recovery run & rep session
3M am recovery run
3M pm incl 8x400m reps off 45s jog

I wanted to squeeze in another rep session this week, so I went for it again this evening despite my legs feeling pretty heavy.

The reps were shorter and felt like good training for my sometimes sluggish legs. The first of the eight reps was more like 800m, but the rest were close to 400m.

600m-1K reps

6M double; recovery run & rep session
3M am recovery run
3M pm incl 5x600m-1K reps off 60s jog

My legs were full of life again. The reps were a bit variable in length as a result of traffic and traffic lights. I have more of a sense of my pace after Monday and as a result I felt pretty happy with the pace of my reps.

Easy

6M double; 3M recovery runs x2

My legs are a bit tight after the race. And my sides are too (a novel place to lose fitness). I just ran gently to stretch my legs.

A flippin race!

13M incl 10K race in 32m44s

I raced the Bupa London 10K today and really enjoyed it. I can't tell you how much I LOVE to race!

I had an elite spot (somehow), so the warm up etc was enhanced by the fact that Mo was sitting on the floor pinning his number on next to me as I pulled on the Highgate stripes.

I had pretty low expectations after 3 months of 30-miles-a-week-4-or-5-days-a-week training. So 32.44 felt like a real bonus. I ran rubbish splits though - I felt great at the beginning but could feel the pace from about 3K and was definitely slowing by half way (16.00 dead). By the end, my lack of miles was really coming home to roost. And my sprint finish pushed me into a post-race vom - something I don't remember doing since I was an unfit but eager schoolboy.

I reckon 32.00 is within my reach at next week's track 10K I'm going to make my maraca now

Longer!

9M am steady run

I was at clinic in Romford today, so I took advantage of my journey's needs and ran along the canal to Stratford. In the rain.

Thursday, 23 May 2013

Tempo

6M double; recovery run & short tempo run
3M am recovery run
3M pm hard

As per usual. Traffic lights favorable, which meant it was pretty much flat out the whole way.

Wednesday, 22 May 2013

Reps

6M double; recovery run & rep session
3M am recovery run
3M pm incl 5x800m-1K off 60s jog

The usual route home but with slightly longer reps. I felt pretty good despite a fair amount in my pack.

Tuesday, 21 May 2013

Steady

8M double; recovery run & steady run
3M am recovery run
5M pm steady run

Busy day. Finishing in the City, so my evening run was a little bit longer (but not much).

Yet another short tempo

3M pm short tempo run

Baby duties this morning, so I just ran once. Another short tempo session home. Not quite as lung busting as Friday, but decent.

Friday, 17 May 2013

Another short tempo

8M double; recovery run & short tempo
5M am recovery run
3M pm tempo run

I extended my morning run a little on the Heath this morning. Parliament Hill is unfamiliar territory right now and felt hard.

I ran hard all the way home with barely a pause required by the traffic lights and crossings. It was about the best short tempo I've managed. Absolutely spent.

Reps

6M am double; recovery run & rep session
3M am recovery run
3M pm incl 5x800-1K off 60s jog

My reps turned out a little longer today because I had longer waiting standing still at traffic lights rather than jogging.

Wednesday, 15 May 2013

Marginally longer

9M double; recovery run & steady run
3M am recovery run
6M pm steady run

I had a meeting across town this afternoon, so took advantage of the longer journey to extend my evening run - at a steady pace.

Tuesday, 14 May 2013

Reps

6M am recovery run & reps
3M am recovery run
3M pm incl 5x800m-ish reps off 60s recovery

I was back in the groove today and felt really good on my evening reps.

Recovery runs with a cold

6M double; recovery run x2
3M am recovery run
3M pm recovery run

I have a cold, so I ran easy.

Friday, 10 May 2013

Tempo-ish

6M double; recovery run and kind of tempo run
3M am recovery run
3M pm tempo (except for traffic lights)
